Glycerol also called glycerine or glycerin; is a simple polyol compound. This crude (semi- or un-refined) form is used in industrial applications and may be highly coloured due to the presence of impurities. The glycerol backbone is found in all lipids known as triglycerides. Glycerol has three hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature.
