This World Environment Day, we’re proud to launch IXOM’s Water Stewardship Framework - a structured, global approach that defines how we manage water within our operations, share expertise with customers and partners, and contribute to positive water outcomes in the communities where we operate.
Why a Water Stewardship Framework
IXOM operates across ten countries and supplies critical water treatment solutions to industries that depend on reliable, high quality water, often in water-scarce areas. Many of our sites also operate in water stressed regions, and realities require a responsible and transparent approach to our use of this vital resource.
The framework clarifies our role as both a water user and a water enabler. It embeds stewardship into decision making and aligns our actions with environmental, social, and economic outcomes over the long term.
“At IXOM, our deep connection to water is reflected not only in the markets we serve but also in the actions we take to benefit society and the environment. Developing our Water Stewardship Framework has been such a rewarding process because it has allowed us to clearly articulate how our activities can protect, improve, and enhance outcomes for both the environment and the communities in which we operate” – Katrina Summersett, Head of Sustainability at IXOM
An Outcomes-Focused Approach
The framework is built around four focus areas that reflect where IXOM can make the greatest impact:
1. Water Conservation
We reduce our water footprint by improving efficiency and limiting reliance on potable water wherever practical. This includes operational optimisation, reuse initiatives, rainwater capture, and sourcing alternative water where fit for purpose. These actions are guided by site level data and prioritised where water scarcity risks are highest.
2. Knowledge Sharing
Water stewardship extends beyond our fence line. IXOM applies deep technical expertise in water treatment chemistry and process optimisation to support customers in reducing water use, improving effluent quality, and meeting regulatory requirements. This includes water audits, data driven system design, and collaborative problem solving across complex industrial processes.
3. Community Benefit
Access to safe water and healthy waterways is a shared interest. The framework recognises opportunities to improve drinking water quality, reduce harmful discharges, and support safe recreational use of water bodies. Where appropriate, IXOM contributes solutions and partnerships that deliver broader social and cultural benefits.
4. Environmental Benefit
We leverage our technical expertise and long-standing industry partnerships to enable environmentally safer operations and outcomes for our customers and suppliers. Where possible, IXOM looks to partner with organisations who support conservation and habitat rehabilitation, and support their safe use of our products to deliver positive environmental outcomes.
Ownership Across the Value Chain
Water stewardship is a collective responsibility. Everyone at IXOM is accountable, from site operations to strategic planning. Externally, we work with customers, suppliers, regulators, and communities to enable shared outcomes in areas like water conservation, water quality and safety. The framework provides a common reference point for these conversations, grounded in evidence and operational reality.
Looking Ahead
Through collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, IXOM will advance responsible water stewardship and support sustainable access to water for future generations. This framework is our statement of intent as well as a guide for action, reflecting IXOM’s role as a trusted contributor across the water industry.
