Improving Chlorine Transport Safety

Sophie Smith 22 April 2026

Safe and consistent chlorine transport plays an important role in protecting people, infrastructure, and communities. As part of our commitment to aligning and elevating industry standards, IXOM partnered with Water Corporation to host a chlorine handling and restraint demonstration at our Welshpool facility, supporting greater consistency in cylinder restraint approaches across Western Australia.

Designed to support operational excellence and regulatory confidence, the session reflects IXOM’s broader commitment to advancing safety standards across the water and utilities sector.

Strengthening Industry Alignment Through Practical Training

The demonstration brought together representatives from Water Corporation’s Safety Management, Dangerous Goods, Engineering and Procurement teams, alongside their transport partner.

By providing a practical review of nationally aligned chlorine cylinder restraint methods, participants were able to validate existing procedures, explore real-world operational considerations, and engage directly with IXOM’s technical specialists.

“The practical focus of the session allowed our teams to validate approaches, ask the right operational questions and ensure our practices meet or exceed current national expectations. Collaborative sessions like this are an important part of maintaining high safety standards.” Mark Comber, Lead HSE Systems at Water Corporation

This collaborative approach supports shared safety objectives while enabling organisations to apply best-practice guidance consistently across diverse operational environments.

Technical Expertise that Translates into Safer Outcomes

IXOM’s technical team led a hands-on demonstration of correct crate and cylinder securing techniques, grounded in current national standards and informed by extensive field experience.

The session reinforced the importance of practical, standardised approaches that reduce handling and transport risks while supporting compliance across jurisdictions. By focusing on application as well as theory, IXOM continues to help customers translate regulatory requirements into safe, repeatable day-to-day practices.

“Consistent, nationally aligned practices are essential to safe chlorine transport. By working collaboratively with water utilities and transport partners, we can help turn standards into practical, everyday outcomes that protect people and communities.” Jamie Price, Regional Sales Manager – SA, WA, NT at IXOM

Building Capability Beyond a Single Site or Organisation

To support broader industry benefit, the demonstration was professionally recorded to create a training resource accessible to utilities, carriers and operators across Australia.

The resource is designed to assist organisations by:

  • Supporting alignment with nationally consistent restraint practices
  • Reducing operational and transport-related risks
  • Promoting consistency across multiple sites and regions
  • Enabling effective onboarding and training for new or remote staff

A Long-Term Commitment to Safer Chlorine Handling

This initiative reflects the ongoing collaboration between IXOM and Water Corporation and a shared commitment to managing hazardous materials safely and reliably.

As standards and operating environments continue to evolve, IXOM will continue to work with utilities and transport partners across Australia and New Zealand to provide technical guidance, training and industry leadership that supports safe chlorine handling now and into the future.

Organisations seeking to strengthen their chlorine transport and handling practices are encouraged to engage with IXOM’s technical specialists here to explore tailored training and support options.
